This post is a good follow-up to the article shared last week that covered the 401K savings shortfall for many Americans. That the average level of savings per person won’t be adequate for a long-lasting retirement is a major issue pre-retirees will soon have to deal with. To make matters worse many people choose not to think about it and let procrastination or denial negatively affect personal actions to correct the situation.
Based on my conversations with hundreds of people since starting this site, I can tell you there are too many people who choose to do nothing when available options seem undesirable. It’s my job to let everyone know that there are several worthwhile options available whether retirement savings are sufficient or not. Where’s the harm in having an open conversation that will help set some benchmarks?
When it’s been decided where you need to make up ground, Cindy Perman of CNBC goes over a few things everyone can do if retirement savings aren’t adequate enough to meet future income needs. The article can be found here. (Sorry- Broken Link)
I would like to stress the importance of reading through the comment section for a look at what other people in your similar situation have to say about this subject.
Before any of these emergency steps are taken you’ll need to find out where your current assets stand in relation to your desired level of retirement income. It is likely that in many cases retirement savings can accomplish more than you think when the right strategy has been developed. If not, Cindy’s article and the related comments may shed some light on possible solutions that will bolster your retirement income plan.
These are all simple ideas that most have likely considered. Just as simple are the actions you can take to protect what you have and give yourself a realistic snapshot of what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to call, email or schedule an appointment now to take a measurement of where you stand.
